About Moving Words
Where can I find Moving Words Poems?
Poems from the current competition can be found on Metro buses traveling in Arlington County, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax County, and Fairfax City, and on the arlingtonarts.org website. All poems from the previous ten years are archived on the Arlington County Commuter Services' website, CommuterPage.com.
Who chooses the poems?
Poems are chosen by a panel of literary professionals, whose criteria is above all literary merit, but also includes a desire to help make the day more pleasant for the area's bus commuters. A new panel of judges is selected each year.
Who can submit poems?
Poets who live within the DC Metro transit area (the Northern Virginia counties Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun and the cities Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church; the District of Columbia; and the Maryland counties Montgomery and Prince George’s) and are 18 years old or older are eligible to submit work to the competition. Poets who have previously been selected for Moving Words must wait two years before submitting entries again. A separate competition for students enrolled in Arlington Public Schools is held each year; click here for information.
Who funds Moving Words?
MOVING WORDS is a program of the Cultural Affairs Division of the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources, and is sponsored by the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services Commuter Assistance Program and METRO, to make your ride more enjoyable.
Who can have a free poster?
Teachers in the DC Metro Transit area (see above) and Arlington County employees are eligible for free posters. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to request a poster.
