Bless Me, Ultima

Special Events
For more information, call 703-228-1850

Find, Read and Release!   Beginning in Mid-September, look for copies in both English and Spanish of Bless Me Ultima to show up in unexpected places around Arlington County! If you find one, you are encouraged to read it and then leave it somewhere for someone else to discover. Record the date and place of your find on the bookplate inside the front cover so that we can track the book's journey. We also invite you to make comments to
our blog.

THE BIG PAINT! Community Mural Paint-by-Number. Bring to life the mythical imagery in Rudolfo Anaya's novel. Local visual artists David Amoroso, Ubaldo Sanchez and Maureen George coordinated the design, in "paint-by-number" format, of large plywood panels that illustrate events in the novel. Each panel will be painted by members of the community at many different events, and upon completion, will be installed at Central Library where the whole "story" can be viewed.

Barred owlSundays, September 23,  30      Ultima's Owl:  Bless Me, Ultima is a coming-of-age story set in post-World War II New Mexico, full of dreams, legends and folkways. It revolves around young Antonio and his "magical" grandmother, Ultima. Mr. Owl, a barred owl who is a current resident of Gulf Branch Nature Center, will be on hand to give us a glimpse into the world of "Ultima's Owl", with a naturalist who will interpret, demonstrate and discuss the owl's uniqueness as a hunter, its folklore and its prominence as a symbol in Bless Me, Ultima.
In addition to "Ultima's Owl", the community is invited to participate in the Bless Me, Ultima Paint-by-Number Project at both events. (see above)

October 3 - 31    "The Art of the Storyteller" Exhibition: Jemez Pueblo artist Joe Cajero Jr. and Choctaw Tribe artist Randy Chitto present an exhibition of Storyteller figures of New Mexico. Joe Cajero's cherubic koshares capture all the delightful nuances of the pueblo tricksters, who, in Native American tradition, delight in playing tricks on the unsuspecting - they clown, flirt, tease and generally wreak havoc. Turtle storytellers are Randy Chitto's trademark. In his Choctaw tribe, the turtle is considered to be the keeper of stories and history. "Slowly walking back and forth, the turtle fills the gap between now and then, telling us what we need to know. Their hard shells protect them from evil influences. They keep everything inside and practically live forever. Nothing can take away their stories."
The Opening Reception, Sunday, October 7, 3 - 5 will include an information session about our 47th State and the setting for Bless Me, Ultima, entitled "Do I need a Passport to go to New Mexico?". Shirlington Library, 4200 Campbell Ave.
703-228-1850.
