Grants Program

Arlington Commission for the Arts Grants

The Arlington Commission for the Arts administers the grants program for Arlington County's artists and arts organizations.  The Arlington County Policy for the Support of Arts Organizations and Artists (as approved by the Arlington County Board on December 8, 1990) describes eligibility for the program, application procedures and criteria for  evaluation.  For more information, call grants officer Joan Lynch at 703-228-1852, or email her.

Grants are available for non-profit arts organizations that are headquartered in Arlington,  and for individual practicing artists producing, composing, writing, presenting or supporting dance, literary arts, media arts, music, theatre, visual arts or related arts, who are legal residents of Arlington.

Staff and peer review panels analyze applications and make recommendations to the Arts Commission.  Commissioners read each application, and consider the input from staff and panelists when making grant decisions.  Arts Commission and panel meetings are open to the public. Dates and locations will be added as soon as they have been finalized.

Individual Artist Spotlight Grant Program For Visual, Media, Literary and Performing Artists

Spotlight Grants are intended to encourage Arlington-based visual, media, literary and performing artists to develop and present innovative new arts projects or programs that benefit Arlington County and its residents, increase access to an involvement in arts experiences for Arlington residents and to respond to diverse community needs.

Eligibility and Basic Guidelines for Spotlight Grants:

  • For legal residents of Arlington County, aged 18 or older
  • For performing, literary, visual and media artists
  • Total funding is $15,000, offering three grants for $5,000
  • At least one public presentation is required during the 12-month grant period

Challenge Grants

The Arlington County Board approved a new challenge grant for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2009, to encourage small- and mid-sized arts organizations supported by the Arlington Commission for the Arts to expand their corporate and business funding.  This grant is in addition to the annual support grants recommended by the commission.

To be eligible a group must currently be receiving either a General Operating Support or a Space and Services grant from Arlington, and must also be a 501(c) (3) organization. Subject to limitations based on the total grant pool, the grant is a 1-2 matching grant, and will be based on new and/or increased corporate funding support obtained by a group during the period from July 1, 2008 - February 20, 2009.  (i.e. for every $2 of eligible funding, an arts group may receive $1 of grant funds.)  The comparative period to determine the amount of new/increased funding is July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008.
Applications for this challenge grant must be received by February 27, 2009.  Grants will be awarded no later than June 30, 2009.
Only funds received from businesses, corporations and corporate foundations are eligible.  Funds received from individuals, governmental entities and other non-corporate foundations are not eligible. In-kind donations from businesses are not eligible.

Please see the Challenge Grant Guidelines for additional information and eligibility requirements.
