June 19 - August 22 Paradox Now! at the Arlington Arts Center: Paradox Now! attempts to change history -- or at least change our minds about it. Some of the artists reenact historical events, bringing them into the present tense -- like Mark Tribe , who uses actors to stage famous left-wing American political speeches, or Megan Hildebrandt, who dresses as a 1940s Polish washerwoman and cleans the marble steps in Baltimore neighborhoods that once housed Eastern European immigrants. Others alter the documents of history; still others create pure historical fiction, like Erin Williams' 30' illuminated linen scroll tracing her ancestry back to Jesus Christ. Artist and filmmaker Anna Lucas will give an opening night lecture on Friday, June 19, at 7:30 pm. Her film weaves an unreliable narrative of the life of Pohahontas in the US and Britain. Also: Sparkplug: New Work : A show by the DCAC arts collective; and Scott Hutchison: Drawings New drawings and video. Opening Reception: June 19, 6 - 9 pm Arlington Arts Center

The Arlington celebration has substituted children’s footraces for the horse racing, and has done away with archery, but the wrestling competition is the main attraction and draws wrestlers from as far away as New York. Traditional Mongolian food such as khuushuur (deep fried pockets of dough stuffed with minced meat and vegetables) will be for sale.
