El Inmigrante (The Immigrant)

This award-winning play, written by César Meléndez, is based on real events. It culminates two years of research on immigration by theater troupe Teatro La Polea, founded by Cristina Bruno Catania and Meléndez to spark dialogue on social issues. The play was inspired by a 1997 article in Costa Rican newspaper La Nación and debuted in 2001 — before becoming a phenomenon. Also performed under the title "El Nica," it has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people in theaters, schools, colleges, universities, factories, stores, churches, backyard patios and community centers in Costa Rica.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)’s extraordinary life and iconic biographical paintings have earned her international renown in the world of modern art. Upon Kahlo’s death in 1954, more than 6,500 personal photographs and items belonging to her and husband/artist Diego Rivera were sealed and put in storage. For more than half a century this great collection of personal memorabilia remained hidden from the public. Join us for An Evening of Dance on Film at the Artisphere on Thursday, February 9 at 6pm. Bob Mondello, who reviews movies and covers arts for NPR will serve as our emcee for the evening as we present six short dance films. The evening features a live performance by BMD with NSO cellist Yvonne Caruthers in the Dome Theater.

Representatives from the production companies, as well as Lucy Bowen McCauley and the BMD dancers will be in attendance to discuss the projects and the process.

WSC Avant Barde returns to the work of another favorite author, Albert Camus (some of you may remember the recent production of his Caligula), as they present a new adaptation of his eerily relevant exploration of politically-motivated violence, Les Justes. Rahaleh Nassri, who has acted in WSC productions including Caligula and Titus Andronicus, will provide a new adaptation. Jay Hardee, a WSC Company Member who has achieved directorial success with The Gnadiges Fraulein, Richard III, and Every Young Woman’s Desire, will direct the premiere of that adaptation.

"I paint colorful, representational, oil paintings that capture a moment in mood, light, or composition. My subjects center around landscapes and other discovered items. Ron Cogswell is the Chief Operating Officer of the Civil War Trust, the nation's largest nonprofit devoted exclusively to the preservation of Civil War battlefields endangered by sprawl.

With a lifelong interest in film photography but usually lacking a darkroom for photo processing, he learned digital photography in Smithsonian Associate courses taught by Eliot Cohen, starting in 2001. Mr. Cogswell now uses a Nikon D80 digital single-lens reflex camera with a wide-angle zoom lens (a Tamron 17-50 mm F/2.8), occasionally supplemented by a Pentax Optio A10 digital point-and-shoot compact camera. Mischief Managed: IBIS Annual Concert for Children

Children of all ages can enjoy live classical music in a performance that features two beloved works. Enjoy Mischief Managed—the closing music from John Williams’ score to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban —scored for a quintet of harp, flute and string trio followed by Maurice Ravel’s gorgeous score, the Mother Goose Suite, that will feature a “celebrity narrator” telling the familiar fairytales. Arlington Children’s Chorus director Kevin Carr will be on hand to lead the audience in joining in to the musical fun. Both works will be set against images projected on Artisphere’s unique Dome Theatre screen.
